Skye, Inner Hebrides

Previously: Sunshine in Harris

Whilst we had taken the swiftest route to Lewis and Harris, we took the slow road back via Skye. Given the Harris ferry arrives fairly early in the day and that the sun was splitting the skies, it would have been a shame not to take advantage of cruising some of the Inner Hebrides on our way down the road.

We decided to take a hike around the Quiraing. Now, the original story was that we were going to take a short hike, using part of the 3-hour loop to do an out and back. A likely tale. Of course, we ended up doing the entire loop. The views were truly extraordinary - the clearest weather I have seen on Skye highlighting a panorama of ridges and cliff edges.

These landslip rock formations are an infamous site in Skye, and there were plenty of tourists milling around on the lower sections of the hike. However, after a half hour of hiking, you can leave the crowds behind.

The Quiraing sheep became convinced that our dog was trying to herd them, despite him being entirely oblivious to their presence. He was doing a pretty good job for a dog who didn't realise he was doing anything other than enjoying a walk.

The sunshine started to wear us out and we were pretty exhausted by the time we tumbled back into the car for the drive to Glasgow. It had seemed a good idea to spend the afternoon in Skye, but now it was 7pm and we still weren't even on the mainland. We ate a quick dinner at the Sligachan Hotel (good food, with gluten-free and vegetarian options), jumped back in the car, and didn't arrive back in Glasgow until gone midnight.

All in all, a perfect way to spend a few days. I have rapidly-forming plans to go back to Harris to run. Perhaps for a week or so. Get myself lost in those sand dunes maybe. She's a wild one. An unforgettable one.
